Gap by category

Large figure is the median gap for the shelf (positive: dearer delivered to Canada); small figure is the number of products compared. Cells with fewer than 20 products are not published.

Gap by brand

Brands are ranked by the number of products compared against the US, among brands with at least 20 compared products for some region. A dash means that brand has fewer than 20 products in that comparison.

In plain words

Method

  • Same product, two regions. A product is compared only if it has a delivered price in Canada and in the other region, and is in stock at a retailer that ships to each. Products sold in only one region are not included.
  • Delivered price. Each region’s figure is the cheapest landed total for that product: item, shipping, import duty and brokerage, from the landed-cost engine behind every ALLR price. The engine adds no destination sales tax (GST/HST/PST, VAT) in any region. One consequence to read the EU and UK columns with: a shelf price at an EU or UK store already contains that store’s local VAT, which stays in the price for a buyer in the same VAT area, while US and Canadian shelf prices carry no tax. That tilts the EU and UK comparisons toward “dearer there” than a tax-free basis would show. See methodology and the import duty calculator.
  • Canadian dollars. Both totals are converted to CAD with the exchange rates the site already prices with: 1 USD = 1.4000 CAD, 1 EUR = 1.5608 CAD, 1 GBP = 1.8617 CAD.
  • The gap. For each product, Canada’s total divided by the other region’s total, minus one. The published figure is the median across products, so a few extreme listings cannot move it.
  • Minimum sample. A row is published only with at least 20 compared products. Smaller rows show a dash.
  • As-of date. The newest product update among the compared products. The figures are recomputed from the live catalogue and kept for up to 15 minutes.
  • What this does not say. It compares prices of the same listed products, not a basket weighted by what riders buy, and it says nothing about quality, warranty or returns. Product pages count once each, even when a page covers several colourways.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

  • What does the index measure?

For the same product, it compares the cheapest delivered (landed) total to Canada with the cheapest delivered total to another region, after converting both to Canadian dollars. A positive gap means the product costs more delivered to Canada. The figure on this page is the median of those per-product gaps.

  • What counts as a landed price?

Item price, shipping, import duty and brokerage for the destination, computed by the same landed-cost engine that prices every tile on ALLR. The engine adds no destination sales tax (GST/HST/PST, VAT) in any region. A shelf price at an EU or UK store already includes that store's local VAT, so the EU and UK comparisons lean toward “dearer there” compared with a tax-free basis; the US comparison has no such tilt. See the methodology page for how the engine works.

  • Which products are compared?

Only products that have a delivered price in Canada and in the other region, and that are in stock at a retailer shipping to each. Products that sell in only one region are not in the comparison. A row is published only when at least 20 products back it; smaller samples are hidden rather than shown.

  • Why the median and not the average?

A handful of unusual products (a clearance item, a mispriced listing) can drag an average far from what a typical rider pays. The median of the per-product gaps is the middle product, so it is not moved by a few extremes.

  • Which exchange rates are used?

The same rates the rest of the site uses to price gear in your currency, read when this page is built. The exact rates in use are printed in the method section.

  • How fresh is it?

The figures are recomputed from the live catalogue and kept for up to 15 minutes. The “as of” date is the newest product update among the products in the comparison.
