Starter motorcycle gear kit for US riders: three tiers from US$699, priced from US stores
A complete five-piece starter motorcycle gear kit costs US$698.87 to US$1,680.26 landed on 2026-11-03 at the cheapest source for each piece, and US$829.91 to US$1,832.08 if you buy only from US-based stores. Every helmet is priced from a store that states DOT. Every pick is checked against live ALLR prices.
A complete starter motorcycle kit for a US rider is five pieces (helmet, jacket, gloves, pants, boots), and on 2026-11-03 it cost US$698.87, US$1,249.80 or US$1,680.26 depending on tier, using the lowest landed price ALLR found for each piece (item, shipping, duty and brokerage; sales tax excluded). Buying every piece from a US-based store instead costs US$829.91, US$1,329.82 and US$1,832.08: US$131.04, US$80.02 and US$151.82 more. Helmets are priced from a store whose page states DOT, since that is the US federal label. The tiers below use the same pieces as our Canadian beginner kit, re-priced for US buyers.
DOT, ECE 22.06 and what a US rider should look for
DOT is the US federal helmet label: the maker certifies the helmet to FMVSS 218 and prints the label (49 CFR 571.218; the test detail is in ECE 22.06 vs DOT). ECE 22.06 is a European type approval with a rotational test that DOT lacks. Several of the cheapest listings on ALLR are European stores selling the ECE version of a helmet; the page may not state DOT. So for this guide every helmet is priced from a store that says DOT on the page, and the cheaper overseas price is shown only as a note. Where a model's page states both DOT and ECE 22.06, you get both labels. State helmet laws differ, so check yours; the certifications overview explains each label, and how to check a helmet is ECE 22.06 certified shows how to read the sewn label. Our ECE 22.06 helmet filter lists helmets whose pages state it.
Budget kit: US$698.87 at the cheapest source
| Piece | Pick | Lowest landed, any store | Cheapest US-based store |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helmet | HJC C10 Solid (DOT and ECE 22.06 stated at The Helmet Shop) | US$119.99 (The Helmet Shop, US) | US$119.99 |
| Jacket | REV'IT Eclipse 2 jacket (light textile) | US$169.46 (Motardinn, Spain) | US$199.99 (Cycle Gear, J&P Cycles) |
| Gloves | Alpinestars Celer V3 (EN 13594 level 1 and KP stated) | US$102.04 (ChromeBurner, NL) | US$109.95 (Alpinestars US, BTO Sports) |
| Pants | REV'IT Eclipse 2 pants | US$122.21 (Motardinn, Spain) | US$179.99 (SportbikeTrackGear) |
| Boots | RST Tractech EVO D3O (EN 13634 level 2 stated) | US$185.17 (Motardinn, Spain) | US$219.99 (Cycle Gear, MotorcycleCloseouts) |
| Kit total | 5 pieces | US$698.87 | US$829.91 |
The gap between the columns is mostly the jacket, pants and boots: three pieces whose cheapest source on 2026-11-03 was one Spanish store. Import orders add delivery time and return friction that the landed price does not show; see buying gear from Europe to the United States. The HJC C10's overall cheapest listing was US$115.68 (GR Motorcycle, Canada), but that page did not state DOT, so it is not used. The Eclipse 2 jacket and pants pages do not state an EN 17092 class in the data we read, so ask the store for the class before you buy.
Mid kit: US$1,249.80 at the cheapest source
| Piece | Pick | Lowest landed, any store | Cheapest US-based store |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helmet | AGV K3 (DOT and ECE 22.06 stated at J&P Cycles) | US$199.98 (J&P Cycles, US) | US$199.98 |
| Jacket | Alpinestars Andes V4 Drystar (waterproof; EN 17092 A stated) | US$319.95 (Chap Moto, US) | US$319.95 |
| Gloves | REV'IT Cayenne 2 (gauntlet) | US$154.70 (Strath Moto, Canada) | US$174.99 (Cycle Gear, RevZilla) |
| Pants | Alpinestars Andes V4 Drystar pants (EN 17092 A stated) | US$274.31 (Motostorm, Italy) | US$284.95 (Chap Moto) |
| Boots | Alpinestars SMX-6 V3 (EN 13634 level 1 stated) | US$300.86 (FC-Moto, Germany) | US$349.95 (2 Wheel HQ, Alpinestars US) |
| Kit total | 5 pieces | US$1,249.80 | US$1,329.82 |
This is the kit most riders are happier with after a season: a waterproof jacket and matching pants that zip together, a gauntlet glove and the sport-touring boot Alpinestars has refined over several versions. The AGV K3 at US$199.98 states both DOT and ECE 22.06 at J&P Cycles; its cheapest listing overall was US$188.27 (Motardinn, Spain), which stated ECE only.
Premium kit: US$1,680.26 at the cheapest source
| Piece | Pick | Lowest landed, any store | Cheapest US-based store |
|---|---|---|---|
| Helmet | Shoei RF-1400 (DOT and Snell stated at BTO Sports) | US$549.99 (BTO Sports, US) | US$549.99 |
| Jacket | Alpinestars Bogota Pro Drystar (EN 17092 AA stated) | US$374.06 (Motardinn, Spain) | US$494.95 (2 Wheel HQ, Chap Moto) |
| Gloves | REV'IT Cayenne 2 | US$154.70 (Strath Moto, Canada) | US$174.99 (Cycle Gear, RevZilla) |
| Pants | Alpinestars Andes V4 Drystar pants | US$274.31 (Motostorm, Italy) | US$284.95 (Chap Moto) |
| Boots | TCX RT-Race (EN 13634 stated) | US$327.20 (Cycle Gear, RevZilla) | US$327.20 |
| Kit total | 5 pieces | US$1,680.26 | US$1,832.08 |
The helmet is US$350 of the premium kit's price, and the Shoei RF-1400's cheapest listing overall (US$359.26, FC-Moto, Germany) states ECE 22.06 only, which is why the DOT-stating US price is the one shown. For street riding the difference between this and a sound DOT helmet is comfort, weight and ventilation, as are expensive helmets safer? explains.
Add a back protector
Many jackets ship with a foam dummy in the back pocket rather than a certified back protector, so check yours. The Alpinestars Nucleon KR-Cell back protector (level 1 armour stated) landed at US$74.89 from High Road Motorsports (Canada) and US$77.94 from BTO Sports (US) on 2026-11-03: US$773.76 and US$907.85 when added to the budget kit's two columns. What it does and what an airbag adds is in the back protector and airbag guide.
Which US stores came up cheapest
Among US-based stores, the cheapest listing for these 14 products came from Cycle Gear, RevZilla, J&P Cycles, Chap Moto, 2 Wheel HQ, BTO Sports, SportbikeTrackGear, The Helmet Shop, Alpinestars US and MotorcycleCloseouts. That is a snapshot of one day, not a ranking of stores: prices move daily and the cheapest store changes by product. Open the product page for the live comparison. Sizing differs by brand; the sizing guide has EU-to-US conversions, and the head shapes guide helps with fit.

About these figures
Prices are ALLR's US landed totals read on 2026-11-03 (item, shipping, duty and brokerage; sales tax excluded), for new items in stock at stores that ship to the US. Certifications are what store pages state, not label checks. The method is on the methodology page, and the full buying sequence starts at the buyer's guide hub. This guide shares its picks with the Canadian beginner kit, whose prices are in Canadian dollars.
